Your car is a complex collection of machinery that uses pistons, belts, and wheels to work. The most common sign that your car’s belts are wearing out is a loud squealing. You might notice this noise most when you turn on the air conditioner or heater or right when you start up the car. This is a sign that the belts are slipping on their wheels, which means they’re either too loose or they’re beginning to deteriorate.
Check the belts in your vehicle’s engine compartment for signs of fraying or cracking. Your car most likely has two belts, the serpentine belt and the timing belt. Both of these will be visible in the engine compartment and should be readily accessible for a visual inspection.

By the time you notice that your steering or your air conditioner has stopped working, the belt will have deteriorated almost completely.
